SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Regarding HHK-SR Football & Cheerleading Association

Dear Football and Cheerleading Families:

The HHK-SR Indians and the Highlands Bulldogs are pleased to join together and form a new youth football and cheerleading association, the Northern Highlands Junior Football and Cheerleading Junior Highlanders. It was a difficult decision for the board to retire the Indians which has served the families of HHK-SR for over fifty years, but we believe that the decision was necessary to continue to provide football and cheerleading to our children.

Despite its history and some recent successes on the field, the past few years have been very challenging to the program.   As two small towns we have limited numbers for players and volunteer coaches and limited field space. These factors have placed a great deal of stress on the program and its teams in recent years.   In fact, in the last two years HHK-SR football was nearly unable to field a team at one or more levels. We believe that by joining with our friends from Upper Saddle River and Allendale, we can continue to provide all present and future children in our town, the opportunity to play football and to cheer for years to come.

The fact that the four towns feed into a strong regional high school makes this transition easy and sensible. As we have seen in other sports, the relationships our children forged through athletics with the children from Upper Saddle River and Allendale prove valuable to them when they enter high school. We have witnessed other sports, such as lacrosse, wrestling, and most recently travel baseball, succeed under the Highlands name. Moreover, as these “town” programs consolidate into “Highlands Regional” programs, we have seen an increase in interest by the various high school coaches as they now have a clear feeder program into their high school program.

The board of the new Junior Highlanders Football & Cheerleading Program will consist of members from both the former Indians and Bulldog programs, with the goal of equal representation.   The two boards are committed to working together in the collective best interest of our children.  The formation of this new organization has been aided by the fact that several former Bulldog board members and former Indian board members have established strong relationships through their involvement in the Highlands Lacrosse Program and Highlands Travel Baseball Program.   We are in the process of drafting by-laws that will be fair and equitable to participants of both former programs.

The following will serve as an outline of what we expect to take place:

  • The development of a new logo consistent with the new “Junior Highlanders” mascot

  • New Uniforms and helmets consistent with the new logo and the “Red, Black and White” color scheme utilized by Northern Highlands High School.

  • A new website

  • Ability to utilize the facilities at Northern Highlands High School for practices and games

  • Coaches will be selected and agreed upon by the newly created board and in the spirt of keeping the former programs’ participation equal, provided availability.

There will be more information coming in the near term as to the timeline of registration.  We have a strong conviction that the creation of this new organization will have a lasting positive effect on football and cheerleading in all four towns.  Our hope is that people welcome this evolution with an open mind.

Thank you for your continued support,

Jeff Fiore
